Our motivation is simple. The pandemic isn’t going away any time soon but neither is our environmental crisis. Science shows masks and face coverings are an effective strategy for slowing the spread of COVID-19, which is why governments all over the world are mandating them. But only if everyone wears them. Most options today are made of— you guessed it—plastic. If we can help keep people safe while preventing more plastics from ending up in landfill, we’re going to do whatever we can.

We designed …another blue mask* with natural materials and ViralOff treatment to help reduce crisis-related plastic waste, and to keep those blue surgical masks out of the gutters and in the hands of health professionals. Our ViralOff face covering uses only high quality cotton fabrics which are optimised for both breathability and filtration. Oh yeah, and they’re made in the UK.
x Washable/Reusable
x 100% natural cotton fabrics
x 3D fit adapts to different face shapes
x Won’t fog up your glasses
x European sourced materials
x Independently tested for breathability
x Adjustable ear loops for optimal fit
x Soft natural rubber elastics (contains latex)
Polygiene ViralOff technology protects the treated surface (in this case the outer fabric layer) from viral contamination. The active ingredient has been tested against Corona (SARS), Influenza A, BirdFlu and Norovirus, all of which had a reduction of 99% within 2 hours.
But what does this actually mean?
Put simply, from two hours after use, the treatment will have killed 99% of the virus particles the fabric may have come into contact with. More importantly, you can be confident the mask is safe to use for another wear.
And there’s more good news. The treatment is more durable with less washing, so for the best performance only wash when you really need to (unlike with untreated alternatives, which you should wash after each use). After 30 washes, the performance of ViralOff will begin to reduce.
Inner: 100% Cotton
Outer: 100% Cotton
MADE IN THE UK
We know that one size never fits all, but we tried to fit as many people as we could with this design. We are hoping to introduce more sizes in the future if there is enough interest. If that’s you then please do let us know.
Mask width edge to edge: 23cm
Height: 10cm
Height unfolded: 17cm
The great thing about ViralOff is that you don’t have to wash your mask after every use (which is recommended for most generic face coverings). After short use, hang or lay out the mask to dry, preferably in sunlight for at least 2 hours. After extended use or if the mask becomes damp or dirty it should be washed. You can wash your mask with your normal laundry, at 30°C or hand wash with a gentle detergent. To keep you mask looking extra sharp, we recommend ironing it flat (on low setting) after washing, just like you would your favorite shirt.
x Wash mask before first use
x Hand wash or machine wash at 30°C
x Do not bleach
x Do not dry clean
x Iron on low setting
This is a community face covering. It is not a certified medical mask.
If you are unclear what this means, you can learn more here.
Use of face coverings is recommended to reduce community transmission of Covid-19 but should be used alongside other measures such as regular handwashing and distancing.
Elastic ear loops are made of natural rubber so they contain latex.
NOT SUITABLE FOR THOSE WITH LATEX ALLERGIES.
This product is designed for adults and is not suitable for children under the age of 11.
Our products are made by humans, and we are also, alas, only human. We strive for the best quality possible but it’s a crisis, a certain level of imperfection is expected and mistakes do happen. Though we cannot accept returns for hygiene reasons, we will replace faulty products free of charge
*Technically these are face coverings not face masks. And yep, most of those other ‘face masks’ on the internet are probably also not technically ‘masks’. But face covering aren’t any less important. Yes, we acknowledge this is confusing which is why we wrote an entire article about that here.
Our motivation is simple. The pandemic isn’t going away any time soon but neither is our environmental crisis. Science shows masks and face coverings are an effective strategy for slowing the spread of COVID-19, which is why governments all over the world are mandating them. But only if everyone wears them. Unfortunately, people (especially young people) still aren’t wearing them, or if they are, many people chose options which are made of— you guessed it—plastic. If we can help keep people safe while preventing more plastics from ending up in landfill, we’re going to do whatever we can.
Yes!… Well, actually, we sell face coverings. In fact, most sellers you see are likely selling face coverings while calling them face masks. Yes, we know it’s confusing, which is why we wrote an entire article about it. You can read more about the distinctions here. But it you’d like to check out our collection, you can find them on our shop page!
Short answer: We want to make masks… better!
Long answer: With many recognising masks as a big business opportunity, companies have been quick to offer a range of different—sometimes dubious—performance claims. And with more and more players in the game, the price race has begun, eerily echoing what we witnessed in fashion (and most other physical goods) over the last two decades.
Everyone seems to be trying to edge each other out to offer the cheapest version of the same thing everyone else is selling. Which in this case, may come at the expense of not only the people making these products, but those of us now required to wear often uncomfortable and untested face coverings that might not actually work as well as clever advertising leads us to believe.
But maybe the mask opportunity could actually be a chance for fashion to do better—for our communities and our environment. You can read more about why we we decided to make masks here.
If you have seen our previous work growing materials from bacteria, this isn’t such a weird question. But no, we didn’t. And no, the materials aren’t made by bacteria. But they’re made by humans, who grew the cotton, manned the textile machinery, and stitched them together (in the UK!).
We won’t pretend to be perfect, but we did make the best product we could with the limited time and resources available to us. And with your support, we hope to get back in the lab with our microbes very soon.
Quite frankly, we’re a small team and don’t expect to make huge profits on this project. Revenues will be reinvested in job creation, biomaterial R&D, and paying struggling creatives to make educational content aimed at protecting both people and the planet.
The easiest way to help is to please, please wear a face covering or mask yourself to slow the spread of the virus and set an example for others. If you want to collaborate or work with us, contact us here.
Irony. Come on, guys.
But in all seriousness, our aim for this project is that it becomes irrelevant in 6 months, 12 months, however long it takes to get a handle on this pandemic and back to doing all the things we’d much rather be doing. And let’s be realistic, we’re a small team and can’t possible supply the whole world, but maybe it’ll inspire a few other mask projects with similar values so we can truly become just …another mask project.
We have big dreams. We want to do our part to help eliminate fashion industry plastic and chemical pollution and empower truly circular creation with science, specifically, biology and material science. We believe we can still learn a lot from nature to make things in a way that won’t hurt people or the planet. But changes this big are hard work and are going to take some time. We need to share the little wins just as much as the big ones. And maybe in doing so we can inspire others to try and help us.

We’re big fans of science. Scientists all over the world have been doing their best to better understand the transmission of the COVID-19 virus and make recommendations to help keep people safer. But science seems to have gotten a bad rap lately, or maybe the message is just getting lost in translation.
As a team of material-obsessed scientists, creatives, and communicators, we thought the least we could do was try to connect the dots and share the progress with all of you.
